So the wedding is over, you have a huge pile of gifts to sort through, put away, and return!   After your BIG day has come and gone, many people feel a lack of motivation to follow through with one of the most crucial details to your wedding day – the thank you note.   The wedding journey isn’t over yet!

You’ve been there, someone gives you a nice gesture on even an average day or a birthday, and you spend more time thinking about sending them a note then following through and writing one. Let your wedding be different.  The thank you is so important because the friends and family you love have shared the joy with you in time, expense, and travel.

In our current wedding world, of “anything goes”, traditions fly out the window. It is important to remember these tips when prepping to tie-the-bow to the last element of the wedding you spend months or years planning.

Top tips!

The sooner you send, the higher the impact!  Mail within two weeks of your honeymoon or 1-2 months after the wedding.

• A handwritten note is expected, don’t type or print your appreciation.

Both the Mr. & Mrs. should write the notes. It is customary that the groom writes the notes to his family and guests, and the bride to hers.  Also, having both of you sign each card is a display of unity as new teammates in life.

• Find a good pen, and buy a couple of them! I love ultra fine tip sharpies personally, I feel confident about my handwriting, and I get in a better writing flow.

• Use your hard copy Excel doc to add the gifts per guests line as they come in, and then check them off as you mail them.

• Don’t forget to thank your wedding vendors!

In Writing…

Focus of the guest(s)!  Don’t brag about your recent honeymoon and house hunting.

How can you use that crystal vase or guest bathroom towels? Talk about how you are going to use their gift.

• Express a special memory of a moment you had with them day of wedding or shower– or simply acknowledge their traveling efforts.

• Extras are great for errors, or misspellings while hand writing! Consider ordering formal or coordinating note cards with your new married name on them. You never can have too many, and you two will use them in the years to come.

Overwhelmed where to start?

Start during your engagement. Pre-address your envelopes, or have doubles printed by your stationer when you are ordering invite envelopes. It will save you $$ cash.

For the busy couple! Do 10 envelopes a day each, starting after the wedding or during travel of the honeymoon. Lunchtime at work too might be helpful in curing those postpartum-like wedding blues.

Get a head start! Do all your pre-wedding day gift notes before the big day.

• Make it a mini date! Do them while you watch a movie with your new hubs, or over a glass (or bottle!) of wine.

• Don’t plan to do them all in 1 night! Writing your thank yous can be very time consuming, and you don’t want your handwriting to look lack-luster as your hand gets tired and shaky!

Traditionally

• Thank yous are written in blue or black ink.

Cursive only – Bring out your inner Jane Austen!

• If you want to get crazy! You can send a note acknowledging the gift, mentioning a thank you will be following. This will delay you time.

Purchasing!

• Prices vary due to paper type and the number of details you include. Many people order a small batch of monogrammed ones for the “pre-wedding” gifts, and then order ones that incorporate a wedding photo or their full new Mr. & Mrs. name later.

• If wanting a photo for your thank you, connect your stationer to your photographer pre-wedding so you don’t have to think about it on your honeymoon!

• A nice gesture to mom and dad’s is to send flowers to them while you are on your honeymoon to thank them for their contributions and support.

Shapes and Sizes

• Many people prefer personalized stationary that ties into your wedding and invites. These typically are folded cards with coordinating envelope. You may see a foiling monogram or your new last name embossed. This style will last you many years – so you can order more and save!

Price is typically $1.50 per 1 for 250

• For a more modern bride, we have seem flat cards with colored envelopes. Usually in a A2 (4.25×5.5”) or a A6 (4×6”).  These are a nice chic way to say your thanks but still remain classic. You can still have a beautiful monogram, or a pattern incorporated on the back or as a border.

Price is typically $1.20 per 1 for 250

• We have all seen in the last few years a postcard with wedding photo on it. These are very casual and definitely is not the right fit for a more formal or traditional wedding.  The pro of the postcard, is it’s less expensive and it has a lower postage rate.

Price is typically $.80 per 1 for 250
