Wedding Stationery Etiquette

We have been getting a lot of questions about our ideas on invitations and how to do them, so we asked our friends from Inclosed Studio in Omaha for their help.

Wedding Stationery Etiquette

Etiquette can be one of those tricky, confusing–even frustrating aspects of your wedding planning process. The history of wedding stationery in particular is rich with etiquette and tradition. Whether you are a bride who cares about all that or not, it never hurts to have all the facts. With the hope of making things a little bit easier for you, we wanted to share three common etiquette dilemmas and our advice to help you make the right decision.

Two Envelopes vs. One

Don't you love the inner liner?

Either way is perfectly acceptable and there are pros and cons to each. Traditionally, two envelopes is preferred. The outer envelope is formally addressed to the residence. The inner envelope states who is actually invited. For instance, if the outer envelope reads “Mr. and Mrs. John Smith” the inner envelope would ready “John and Linda Smith and family.”

If children are not invited to the wedding, the inner envelope is a way to politely let your guests know by not including children’s names or “and family” on the envelope.

On the downside, an additional envelope adds weight and material to your wedding stationery– which raises the price of the invitation as well as postage.

RSVP Postcard vs. RSVP with Addressed Envelope

You have options when sending your RSVPs

Traditionally, the RSVP card was always accompanied by a pre-addressed and stamped envelope. This is very formal and pretty and it keeps the RSVP information private and enclosed.

RSVP postcards are very popular because they use less materials and only cost a postcard stamp in shipping. Using a postcard is an easy way to cut a little cost without sacrificing elegance.

Registry vs. No registry On the Invitation

Add details from your registry onto a "Details Card" instead of invitation

We suggest not printing your gift registry anywhere on your invitation suite. Instead, list your wedding website on your details card. This is a great resource for your guests and an appropriate place to list where you are registered. Also, keep in mind that your registry will be listed on your shower invitations and it will spread through word of mouth.

Special thanks to Lauren from Inclosed for your help! We love your invitations!
